Liverpool fans recognised the significance of Trey Nyoni’s selection in the starting lineup against Arsenal, a huge nod to his progress in a game of this magnitude.

For the first time in the Premier League, Nyoni was named in a starting lineup, against the reigning league champions at that.

It’s the 19-year-old’s fourth start in the last six games across all competitions, with his place in the side meaning Ryan Gravenberch drops to the bench for the sixth time this season.

Nyoni was named in the Reds’ starting midfield alongside Alexis Mac Allister, with the Argentine one of seven changes from the midweek win over Chelsea.

“The thinking is that he’s playing very well and we trust him. I think he gives us good control on the ball. I think he also understands the game well,” Iraola explained to Sky Sports.

And the selection of Nyoni had Liverpool fans taking to social media to comment on the significance of Iraola’s decision.

Yes Nyoni! The right choice ahead of Gravenberch (regardless of how this game goes, as we're facing the Champions) to give us a player who properly wants to be in that deeper midfielder, gives us more control with the ball and has been great form all season.

I know pretty much everyone wanted Nyoni starting but still a massive call to give him his first PL start against what's probably the best midfield in the league. Says a lot about how good he is, and also a lot about where Gravenberch currently is

Andoni Iraola putting Nyoni in the starting 11 is not just a good decision, but it’s also seismic given how massive this game is.

— Samuel November 1, 2026

Trey Nyoni arguably the obvious pick in midfield alongside Alexis Mac Allister given the form and fitness of other options, but it’s still a huge call from Andoni Iraola to start a 19-year-old in a game of this magnitude.

— David Lynch November 1, 2026

What a huge vote of confidence for Trey Nyoni to start a game of this magnitude.

A huge talent who will be up against Arsenal’s most physically imposing midfield.

A fascinating contest ahead.

Oh that’s massive for Trey Nyoni. A start against the champions. Feels like a real milestone for him and a testiment to his progression over the past year.

“Trey has earned the trust of everyone – whichever way it goes, this is just a small part of the longer picture for him.” – Iraolacoaster in TIA comments.

“Great to see Nyoni in the team. I have so much faith in the kid but don’t forget, if he doesn’t have his best game today go easy on him and don’t panic!” – Jacob in TIA comments.

“Andoni’s man management is spot on. He’s just in control and is clearly showing that he doesn’t check the name on the back of the shirt. I love it.” – Diogooaaaal20 in TIA comments.

Big opportunity for Nyoni today he deserves a start in an important game he’s just going to prove his class and why Iraola has so much faith in him today #LFC

Loving Iraola's trust in young players. Nyoni has been outstanding and deserves this start

A manager playing based on form and not meritocracy is significant.

I know some will throw Rio not starting back at me, but Gakpo is defensively much more sound as it stands. Once that changes Rio starts the big games.

— Rory Greenfield November 1, 2026

if Nyoni takes this opportunity there’s no looking back

Iraola starting Nyoni in big games tells you all you need to know. The growth from this kid is insane man

— ??? November 1, 2026

Big call to start Nyoni given the significance of the game, but can’t say he hasn’t deserved it, particularly after a sluggish performance from Gravenberch midweek. Hope he seizes it.

— Leanne Prescott November 1, 2026

Nyoni’s selection ahead of Gravenberch does feel significant when you consider it is against Arsenal, who will represent the teenager’s biggest challenge so far.

He has shown he has the temperament for such occasions, and deserves his opportunity. After previously seeing players given games when down on form, it is a welcome change to see the opposite rewarded here.
