CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - There will be windows when rain is less widespread, but the chance doesn’t fully end until after polls close.

Rain and storms are moving through eastern Iowa into the night. While there will be times when it is drier, expect raindrops to be hitting your windows from time to time overnight. Temperatures won’t fall a whole lot overnight, hanging around the upper 50s to low 60s.

Tuesday morning looks potentially fairly wet, too, which could impact your morning trip to work or school and the first few hours of polls being open for Election Day in eastern Iowa. Be ready to have the umbrella handy if you’re heading out and about early in the day, through about 10:00 a.m. or so. Temperatures will rise slowly to the mid 60s in many places by around lunchtime as showers become more scattered than widespread.

That scattered activity continues during an overall lull in the raininess from late morning through mid-afternoon. More development of rain and some thunderstorms looks likely after that, with activity sweeping northeastward as the afternoon and evening wear on. Some storms will be around for the after-work voting time frame, so be ready for more wet weather at the very least.

A few storms between 4:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m. could turn strong, owing to a fairly warm and moist air mass in the region. While widespread severe weather appears unlikely at this time, make sure to react if a stronger storm moves through your area. The chance of these stronger storms is highest, though still quite slim, south of Interstate 80.

Showers wind down on Tuesday night for a period of time, but some sprinkles and drizzle remain possible. After daytime highs in the upper 60s to low 70s, we’ll see temperatures fall into the upper 40s to low 50s by daybreak on Wednesday. With clouds remaining widespread throughout the day on Wednesday, temperatures will only warm a couple of degrees at best into the mid 50s. Winds remain occasionally gusty, and isolated light showers or areas of drizzle remain possible.

This type of weather continues all the way into Thursday, with an area of low pressure responsible for all of this unsettled weather only making it into the Great Lakes by then. By the time all of this rain winds down over the next few days, many areas could see some soaking rainfall totals. The potential is there for widespread amounts of 1 to 2 inches, but there are strong indications that this will depend on where individual rounds of storms track.

Eventually, we’ll see our weather dry out by Thursday night and beyond. That’s also when a push of cooler temperatures arrives, pushing lows into the low 40s by Friday morning. The daytime hours of Friday will be some of the coolest in our current 9-day forecast, with highs only in the upper 40s to low 50s.

Cool autumn weather doesn’t let up this weekend, either, with lows in the upper 30s to low 40s paired with highs in the upper 40s to low 50s. Skies remain pretty cloudy for most of that time, too. All in all, this is actually fairly typical weather for the middle of the fall season.

A slight warm-up takes place next week, but that only pushes temperatures back into the mid to upper 50s for highs. At night, we go the opposite direction, with several mornings of lows in the 30s with frost potential.
